About the event

Background

Sustainability is an important value-add for business and is transitioning from a “nice to have” to a “must-have”. Regulators, consumers, and investors are increasingly evaluating businesses on their sustainability performance and assessing environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.

SMEs are not exempted from said trends: They are generally more vulnerable to impacts from environmental and social issues but are equally more responsive to business trends and can create positive impact on sustainable development.

However, most sustainability approaches are attuned to Corporates and are disparate to approaches for SMEs. SMEs have a need for practical guidance and pragmatic approaches that consider SME-specific challenges and opportunities.

SME Roundtable Objectives

The objectives of the SME roundtable are:

  1. To understand SMEs approaches to sustainability and how it is translated to business strategy
  2. To identify key opportunities & challenges faced by SME business leaders in engaging with employees, and other stakeholders regarding operationalizing sustainability
  3. To identify CEO perspectives and best practices in guiding the sustainability process of the business
  4. To consolidate and incorporate relevant insights (from objectives 1-3) gained from the Roundtable into the “SME’s Practical Guide to Sustainability”.

SME’s Practical Guide to Sustainability

The SME’s Practical Guide to Sustainability offers a pragmatic approach to sustainability for SMEs. The aim of the Guide is to activate and accelerate sustainability in the SME sector, by providing practical information for SMEs that are embarking on their sustainability journey.

The Guide will address the opportunities and challenges in the Malaysian context, provide starting points to implement sustainability in the organization, and highlight best practices to empower SME business leaders to adopt sustainable practices.
