Dear Friends,
I'd like to express my thanks for your support in our initiatives to champion the common goal of corporate sustainability and raising SDG Ambition. Despite the ongoing battle of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 has been a fulfilling year with achievements from our members, us and our partners in advocating and building sustainable businesses. This signifies our collective commitments to to support and grow the sustainability agenda in building a better future through our partnerships and collaborations. To wrap up 2021, I take this opportunity to share our key results at UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei with you:

AWAKEN
To inspire organizations and individuals to take positive sustainability actions
18 Initiatives, 5000+ Engaged Participants

We curated and delivered 18 key initiatives which aimed to Awaken Malaysian & Bruneian Businesses on the importance of corporate sustainability. Those initiatives had over 5000 participants across Public Listed Companies, Government-Linked Companies, and Small Medium Enterprises. Some initiatives includes various webinars, C-Suite Roundtables, engagements, workshops, and many other events. These include HSBC CEO roundtable, MGCC Malaysia CEO Roundtable, Dubai Expo 2020 Roundtable, "ESG In the New Normal: An Investor's Lens" webinars, climate webinars, SDG Ambition Month and more.
Malaysia Voluntary National Review (VNR) 2021

We are a member of the National VNR Technical Working Committee. As a continuation of its last Voluntary National Review (VNR) in 2017, the Malaysian government has volunteered to continue its periodical report on the progress of the SDG 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development in 2021 (VNR 2021). UNGCMYB was highlighted as a best practice in engaging private sector to drive SDGs achievement at a national level.
SDG Ambition Month 2021

Our SDG Ambition Month themed “Inspiring Sustainable Actions for Business Resilience ” is a call to action for companies to engage in sustainable actions for business resilience. During the month, we had over 3000+ registrants across 77+ countries. The events that are presented to the public during the month includes the PRME Forum, SME SDG Festival, GO ESG ASEAN 2021 Summit and Sustainability & Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF 2.0), featuring high-level global and regional speakers from companies such as SINOPEC, United Nations, United Nations Global Compact, BloombergNEF, Microsoft and more.
Dubai Expo 2020 Roundtable

In collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Water's (KASA) and our member, VERITAS Design Group, we have co-organized a Roundtable session in the Malaysia Pavilion of Dubai Expo 2020. The productive discussion surrounded the theme- Resilient Malaysia: Delivering the Climate Agenda for Global Opportunities.
Climate Webinar: SBT

We held various climate webinars to inspire business leaders to embark on this journey. This webinar was supported by British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia (ICDM), Malaysian Dutch Business Council (MDBC) and Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MGCC). Another session we held was the "Measuring Scope 3 Emission" webinar with Capital Markets Malaysia (CMM) and CDP to provide participants with the understanding on how to tackle Scope 3 targets according to SBTi criteria. During this webinar, corporate sustainability practitioners shared how to get started on measuring Scope 3 emissions when applying SBTs and managing sustainability within the supply chain.
Webinar With Bloomberg

In 2021, together with Bloomberg, we organized three (3) "ESG in the New Normal" webinars providing an overview of the current ESG landscape for financers and corporations in Malaysia.

Accelerator Programmes

Our members have participated in various accelerator programmes such as the SDG Ambition Accelerator and Climate Ambition Accelerator alongside other local networks such as Global Compact Network Thailand and Philippines.
Our Members

We are thrilled to announce that we have reached the 100 members milestone in 2021! Currently we have a total of 116 members which indicates a 119% of growth since 2020. Congratulations to our members in taking actions to align their sustainability agendas with United Nations Global Compact 10 Principles. We look forward to working together to strengthen Malaysian and Bruneian companies as a sustainability leader and achieving the
global goals.
ACCESS (Action Center for Sustainable SMEs) Programme

This year, we began the development of ACCESS, a digital sustainability action platform that compromises digital sustainability tools, ACCESS (Action Center for Sustainable SMEs) together with SME Corp alongside our tech partner, Natural Intelligence Solutions, knowledge partners, Nottingham University Business School Malaysia and Taylor’s University Business School, and our pioneer banking partner Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad. ACCESS aims to enable MSMEs to seek advisory services, enable capacity building and network with companies that have SDG and ESG practices. Our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, have also announced this programme at the Small and Medium Industries Development Expo (SMIDEX) 2021. We look forward to the launch of ACCESS in 2022!
SDG Performance Awards 2021

We held our first sustainability performance awards during our Sustainability Celebration Night in efforts to recognise efforts made by the members of UNGCMYB in making sustainability an integral part of their business strategies. The winners at the ceremony were, Bursa Malaysia Berhad, Ditrolic Energy Holdings Sdn Bhd, Duopharma Biotech Berhad, Eco World Development Group Berhad, edotco Group Sdn Bhd, Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB), Sarawak Energy Berhad, Smith & Nephew Operations Sdn Bhd, Tata Consultancy Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and Vinda Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
MYClimateAction Guide for Malaysian Businesses

This year, we've also published our MYClimateAction Guide to the public, This guide, consisting of 3 different guidebooks was developed in partnership with Tata Consultancy Services Malaysia, Nottingham University Business School Malaysia and SENTRAL College Penang. This 3-part Guide seeks to bring business leaders on a journey to address the “What, Why, and How” of climate change, alongside various localised case studies to inspire positive climate action.
CEO Guides

This year, together with Nottingham University Business School, Malaysia we have co-authored and published two(2) CEO Guides. The “CEO Guide to Sustainability-Centric Businesses” was released this year with our knowledge partner Capital Markets Malaysia (CMM)’s Centre for Sustainable Corporations (CSC). Meanwhile, the "Malaysian Businesses for Positive Climate Actions – A CEO's Guide" which is supported by HSBC Malaysia and BMCC was released during the Malaysia Climate Action Week organised by the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) and the British High Commission in Malaysia.
HSBC’s MME Accelerator Programme

The Accelerator Programme was conducted in collaboration with HSBC Malaysia to enhance sustainability within middle-market enterprises through HSBC’s MME Accelerator Programme. The MMEs also had the opportunity to attend a six-week ‘Sustainability Practitioner Certification Programme’ curated by UNGCMYB and Taylor’s University.
Board ESG Workshops

As part of our advocacy, we have conducted 3 board level workshops on ESG topics to enable sustainability as core to business strategies.
ACCELERATE
To actively engage businesses and practitioners to raise SDG Ambition and demonstrate sustainability performance results
Corporate Sustainability Practitioner (CSP) Competency Framework

Together with Bursa Malaysia Berhad, we have jointly developed a Corporate Sustainability Practitioner (CSP) Competency Framework which is designed to help guide sustainability practitioners and support the transition to sustainable businesses.
Three (3) Organizations as Global Stewards

This year, we have engaged three (3) organizations in Malaysia : Bursa Malaysia Berhad, Ditrolic Solar and Axiata to commit to setting science based targets aligned to 1.5c pathway via ‘UNGC Business Ambition for 1.5°Celsius', alongside over 1100 companies globally which has committed to the Science-based Targets.
Action Labs

This year, we have been engaged by 2 corporate members to support the development of their Enterprise Sustainability Plan, GHG accounting and SBTi verification.
Despite the challenging times, there is much to be celebrated. On behalf of the executive office, I would like to once again thank all our members for their support and engagement with us. I also thank our sponsors, partners, friends and special mention to British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), Bursa Malaysia Berhad, Nottingham University Business School Malaysia, School of Management and Marketing, Taylor's University, SME Corp. Malaysia and Natural Intelligence Solutions Technology Sdn Bhd for the collaborations throughout 2021.
UNGCMYB will continue to operate and report our progress based on our purpose to Awaken, Activate and Accelerate Malaysian & Bruneian Businesses to be Sustainable and Profitable. With this, we would also like to encourage you to join our United Nations Global Compact family and work together to raise our collective sustainability ambition for 2022!
